This manuscript explores the extent and drivers of female leadership in Nigerian food wholesale markets using data from 470 commodity associations across 300 markets. Despite women’s active participation as traders, their presence in top leadership roles remains limited, especially in northern Nigeria. Key findings include:

  • Influencing Factors: Women’s active trading, the use of elections for leadership selection, and cultural norms significantly impact female leadership participation.
  • Regional Disparities: Southern Nigeria exhibits higher female leadership engagement (up to 15% in market-level roles) compared to under 1% in the north, reflecting cultural and socio-economic differences.
  • Market Governance Impact: Female inclusion in leadership correlates with better market services, such as improved hygiene and security, demonstrating the broader benefits of gender equity.

The study highlights structural barriers, such as conservative norms and historical male dominance, while identifying opportunities for inclusion through elected leadership, mentorship, and targeted programs. Recommendations include promoting inclusive governance, supporting women’s trading roles, and enhancing leadership training to empower female leaders in food markets
