About this factsheet
- Since its first detection in Michigan in 2010, MSU Extension has been monitoring for the brown marmorated stink bug as a new threat to orchards.
- Adult brown marmorated stink bugs hibernate in woodlots and manmade structures becoming a nuisance pest in many Michigan homes before migrating out to feed on fruits, fruiting vegetables, nuts, and seed pods of wild and cultivated plants.
- Adults and nymphs cause fruit damage when they feed in orchards, but the damage may only become apparent weeks later or after fruit are brought out of storage; damage will look similar to other stink bugs and tarnished plant bugs.
- Peaches and nectarines are attractive at any stage when fruit is present.
- Apples and pears become attractive mid-season; feeding damage close to harvest can be mistaken for bitter pit.
- This factsheet includes instructions for on-farm monitoring to assess local brown marmorated stink bug populations and crop protection strategies for commercial orchards.
