This policy brief analyzes gender disparities in leadership within Nigerian food wholesale markets using data from over 300 markets across seven states and Abuja. The study highlights structural and cultural barriers limiting women’s participation in leadership roles, particularly in northern Nigeria.

Key Findings:

  1. Female leadership is higher in southern markets, but women rarely hold chair or deputy chair positions.
  2. Women are more likely to hold financial roles (treasurer or secretary) than leadership roles in northern regions.
  3. Elected leadership correlates with higher female participation compared to inherited or appointed leadership systems.
  4. Female leadership positively impacts market infrastructure, such as sanitation and security services.

Recommendations:

  1. Inclusive Leadership Processes: Use elections rather than appointments or inheritance for leadership roles to promote equity.
  2. Encourage Female Traders: Provide financial support and policies to increase women’s market participation.
  3. Gender Advocacy: Advocate for policies and legal reforms promoting gender equality in market leadership.
  4. Programs in Conservative Regions: Implement campaigns and training programs targeting northern markets to challenge cultural norms and support female leaders.
  5. Work-Life Balance Policies: Introduce flexible arrangements and diversity-focused leadership training to support women’s dual responsibilities.

Conclusion:
Promoting gender inclusivity in Nigerian food markets requires coordinated efforts involving transparent leadership selection, cultural change, and policy advocacy. Enhancing women’s roles in market governance will foster equitable, efficient, and sustainable market systems.
