Validation Event for Guidelines on Good Hygiene Practices in Nigerian Markets

On October 23, 2023, the RSM2SNF project hosted a validation event at the Adis Hotel in Ibadan, Oyo State, to refine and discuss the implementation of guidelines for good hygiene practices in Nigerian markets. Eighty-one participants, including government officials, civil society representatives, academics, and private sector stakeholders, attended the one-day event to ensure the guidelines’ alignment with market needs.
Event Highlights:
- Welcome Address: Saweda O. Liverpool-Tasie introduced the project's objectives, focusing on food safety, gender roles, and environmental sustainability across the value chains of fish, tomatoes, and green leafy vegetables.
- Keynote Speeches: Representatives from the Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON) and the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) emphasized the importance of upgrading the draft guidelines into a national code of practice and fostering collaboration among stakeholders.
- Presentation of Findings: The RSM2SNF food safety team highlighted findings, including cross-contamination risks from poor handling practices and dirty environments in markets.
- Stakeholder Feedback: Participants shared insights and confirmed the relevance of the guidelines to observed market practices. Feedback was incorporated into the final guidelines.
- Partnerships: MOUs were signed between the project and market authorities from Rahama Market, Bodija Market, Orita Merin Market, and Shasha Market to co-create and implement food safety interventions.
Conclusion:
The event demonstrated the importance of collaboration in improving food safety standards and laid the groundwork for implementing hygienic practices in Nigerian markets.
