For thousands of years the Anishinaabe have lived throughout the Great Lakes region, which includes Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Ontario, Canada. Michigan is home to 12 federally recognized tribal nations and three 1994 land grant institutions, including Saginaw Chippewa Tribal College, Keweenaw Bay Ojibwa Community College, and Bay Mills Community College. MSU Extension staff collaborate with Michigan Tribal Nations to create, deliver and evaluate relevant educational programs with and for American Indians and their families throughout Michigan. Examples include The Building Strong Sovereign Nations: Anishinaabek Leadership for Seven Generations, 4-H Citizenship Academy, Good Governance training, youth programming, community garden programming, and community food programming.
