Welcome to Beyond
Ready in 5, a Michigan 4-H volunteer video
series from MSU Extension. Quick learning
for 4-H volunteers on the go. In just
five minutes or less, you'll discover
practical ideas to help youth build
confidence, connection, and purpose in every
4-H experience. Whether you're a
new or experienced volunteer, these brief
learning moments are designed to keep you
and the youth you serve ready for
success. For this video, we'll explore
belonging starts here. Belonging is more than
just being included. It means young people
feel seen, heard, and valued for who they
are. And when youth feel like they truly
belong, they're more willing to try new
things, share ideas, build skills, and grow
into confident leaders who are beyond ready
for their future. The good news is that
belonging doesn't require a special program.
It's built in the small things 4-H volunteers
do every day. It might look like greeting
youth by name when they arrive, introducing
a new member so they feel welcome right away,
asking a quiet member what they think about
an idea, celebrating effort not just ribbons,
making sure every young person has a role
or a way to participate. These simple moments
send a powerful message, you matter here.
A simple question to always be asking
yourself is, does every youth feel like they
matter here? When belonging is strong, youth
don't just show up to meetings, they connect,
they They connect with friends, they connect
with caring adults, and they connect with
opportunities to grow. Those connections help
young people build the confidence,
teamwork, and leadership skills that prepare
them to be beyond ready. Belonging has always
been part of the 4 -H tradition. You
can hear it right in the pledge, my heart
to greater loyalty. At its core, 4-H is
about relationships. Young people know
there are adults and peers who care about
them and support their growth. As
volunteers, you play a big role in creating
that environment. Volunteers help belonging
by creating positive relationships where
youth know an adult believes in them,
welcoming environments where everyone is
encouraged to participate, safe spaces where
youth feel comfortable trying, learning, and
even making mistakes. In practice, that might
mean letting youth make decisions about
activities or projects, encouraging members
to support and cheer each other on,
helping youth set goals and celebrating
their progress, making meetings
welcoming for youth of all backgrounds and
experience levels. These kinds of experiences
help youth build the confident skills
and connections they need to grow and that's
exactly what helps youth become beyond
ready. As you think about your own club or
program consider this, what is one small thing
you can do to help every young person
feel like they belong? Because when youth feel
valued and connected, amazing things happen.
They grow, they lead, and they become
truly beyond ready. What will you do
to build belonging? Because when you
feel valued and connected they grow
in confidence, develop new skills, and
become truly beyond ready. Thank you
for making 4-H a place where every
young person belongs. Thank you for
