The crossover research method among water conservation, ecology and sociology will be studied in-depth during my study in Michigan State University.

North China Plain is the research area, focusing on exploring the footprint of water and carbon in irrigated agricultural production and the reasonable regulation strategy for groundwater. Agro-meteorological data collected from meteorological stations in North China, including the average temperature, sunshine hours, daily precipitation, county-level agricultural production data, etc., will be used to determine the utilization efficiency for light and heat resources in agricultural production in North China, as well as representative partition for water production function, to build the water and carbon footprint of agricultural production, and build irrigation water and carbon consumption estimation model based on GIS grid computing, to evaluate energy consumption of groundwater irrigation and water, carbon consumption of regional total groundwater irrigated agriculture for the growth period of winter wheat and summer corn per unit area of the North China Plain.

On this basis, using the area statistics function of GIS, we can count water, carbon consumption for the whole region at the process of groundwater irrigation under abundance, flat, dry hydrological model year and years of average precipitation to meet the current food security food yield, analyzing the relationship among grain yield -- the amount of groundwater irrigation -- the groundwater irrigation carbon consumption, evaluating fossil biological energy conversion efficiency in irrigated agriculture. On this basis, respectively, under the scenario conditions to reduce the amount of irrigated groundwater 10 percent, 20 percent, 30 percent, 40 percent, 50 percent, 80 percent and 100 percent at the crop growth period, estimated the energy saving potential of agriculture.
