National Electrical Code Update Courses

All State of Michigan licensed Journey and Master electricians are required to take a State of Michigan approved electrical code update course, within a year after the Michigan Electrical Code is updated. In order to learn the new code, several State approved update courses have been created for electricians.


Electrical Code Update Course:

This 15 hour course is offered in various locations throughout Michigan by several State approved instructors. This course only includes explanation of changes to the National Electrical Code (NEC), the Michigan Residential Code (MRC), and Part 8 Rules of the Construction Code Act. Handout material is provided, however, the participant must provide a personal copy of the National Electrical Code and a calculator. The course includes code practice at finding answers to common wiring questions. Some classes are offered as four sessions 3¾ hours each or as two full-day sessions of 7½ hours each. 100% Online 2017 Electrical Code Update Course:

Significant changes in every article of the National Electrical Code, Part 8 Rules of Public Act 230 of 1972, and the Michigan Residential Code will be discussed and illustrated. Topics include significant changes in the 2017 NEC and where Part 8 Rules modify the Code. Explanation of new administrative rules every contractor and electrician must know. Important differences between the NEC and the Michigan Residential Code are discussed. Also included is explanation of which Code applies to which type of installations. Cost for the course is $80.

This course is approved by the State of Michigan, Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, Bureau of Construction Codes. The course approval ID number is 20-703810. This is an approved Code update course for those individuals seeking State of Michigan electrical license renewal for the 2020 license year. Participants will be awarded an update certificate for successful completion of the course.

You may complete course requirements at your own personal pace, however, you will be limited to a maximum of three-months to complete this code update course. From the date that the course fee is paid, you have three-months to complete the course requirements. Failure to pass the course within the three month time period will require you to repay the course tuition fee, to continue in this State of Michigan Approved electrical code update course.

State of Michigan Approved Journey Electrician Examination Preparation Course:

This is an advance course that covers a variety of topics that you will have to know when taking the State of Michigan Journey Electrician Examination. This course is based on the 2017 National Electrical Code. Topics include: (1) State Public Acts and administrative rules that regulate electrical wiring in Michigan; (2) electrical fundamentals; (3) sizing conductors, electrical device boxes, raceways and pull boxes; (4) electrical system grounding, bonding and equipment grounding and determine the minimum permitted conductor size for each; (5) finding Code requirements for the installation and use of the common electrical conduits, tubings and cables used in the electrical trade; (6) requirements for appliance circuits, and the placement of receptacle and lighting outlets in a dwelling as well as the required circuits; (7) requirements for GFCI and AFCI protection of circuits. (8) sizing equipment and properly place equipment for a branch circuit that contains a single motor or air conditioner; (9) examining basic motor control diagrams; (10) finding Code information as it relates to special locations and occupancy such as, but not limited to, swimming pools, hazardous locations, health care facilities, transformers, temporary wiring and places of assembly.

Cost for the course is $250. It is anticipated a minimum of 30 hours will be required to complete this course.

This course is approved by the State of Michigan, Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, Bureau of Construction Codes. The State of Michigan Course I.D. number is 20-702562. This is an approved course for persons who have been unsuccessful at passing the State of Michigan Journey Electrician Examination.

You may complete course requirements at your own personal pace, however, you will be limited to a maximum of six-months to complete this course. From the date that the course fee is paid, you have six-months to complete the course requirements. Failure to pass the course within the six month time period will require you to repay the course tuition fee, to continue in this State of Michigan approved Journey Examination Preparation Course.

Electrical Code Review:

This is a 30 hour course consisting of ten 3-hour sessions offered one session per week. The course is offered in various locations throughout Michigan by several State approved instructors. Covered are the changes to the National Electrical Code (NEC), the Michigan Residential Code (MRC), and Part 8 Rules of the Construction Code Act. The course also covers the Electrical Administrative Act. This is an excellent course in learning to use the National Electrical Code and the Michigan Residential Code. The course is designed for apprentice electricians, licensed electricians, inspectors, and engineers. It is an excellent course for journey and master license exam preparation. The course covers the entire National Electrical Code and includes homework to help the participant find answers and work problems commonly encountered in everyday wiring. This is also an approved course for those who are required to take a review course in fundamentals and Code for the State license re-examination.
