Chewe Nkonde, PhD
Program: CSUS
Academic Focus Area: International Development
Hometown: Lusaka, Zambia
Advisor: Robert Richardson
Chewe Nkonde is currently pursuing his PhD in the department while on leave from his lecturer position at the University of Zambia (UNZA). Chewe’s dissertation research focuses on the interplay between farm structure change, land use dynamics and agricultural productivity in sub-Saharan Africa using Zambia as his case study. Broadly, his study explores the direct effects and the externalities associated with the rise of domestic large landholders or emergent farmers. Understanding their broader effects on rural development seems to be an important topic, but one on which virtually no research evidence currently exists.
After completing his studies, Chewe will return to his position at UNZA where he will contribute to the training of graduate students in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Extension Education. He plans to lead an initiative that will strengthen the role of social science research in agriculture, in collaboration with the Indaba Agricultural Policy Research Institute (IAPRI) of Zambia.
