Interest Form

The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) teaches children and families how to make health a priority through balanced meals and being active. EFNEP is the nation’s first nutrition education program for low-income populations and remains at the forefront of nutrition education efforts to reduce nutrition insecurity of low-income families and youth. EFNEP classes provide education on nutrition, food safety, food security, food resource management, and physical activity. 
 
Our EFNEP Community Nutrition Instructors are members of their community who deliver nutrition classes to youth audiences and adults who are caregivers of children. Our instructors host classes through our county Extension offices or will partner directly with community organizations to offer a group class. Our program has a variety of curriculums available and delivers an educational series through in-person group classes or virtual learning.  

Who is EFNEP for?  

EFNEP is available to adults, youth and children with limited-financial resources, with an emphasis on families. This includes: 

  • Low-income parents and other adult caregivers (such as grandparents and guardians) who are responsible for obtaining and preparing food for their children.  
  • Low-income pregnant women and teens 
  • Low-income adolescent youth (middle school through high school- ages 13-18 years) 
  • Low-income children and pre-adolescent youth (grades 3rd through 5th)

Secondary audiences include community organizations and agencies that serve low-income youth and families, along with non-participating low- income individuals and families who would benefit from positive changes to the food and physical activity environment and policy or procedural decisions of key stakeholders and decision-makers. 

Limited financial resource or low-income audiences are eligible based on the following:  

  1. Income at or below 185% of the current Poverty Guideline 
  2. Enrolled in any of these public benefits program: 
  • SNAP/Bridge Card 
  • Child Nutrition (School Lunch Program) 
  • Head Start 
  • TANF/FIP (Temporary Aid to Needy Families/Family Independence Program) 
  • WIC/CSP (Women, Children, Infant/Commodity Supplemental Food Program) 
  • FDPIR (Food Distribution on Indian Reservations)

USDA/ NIFA content: EFNEP is a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) federally funded program, administered by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA). EFNEP is a nutrition education program that currently operates throughout land-grant institutions in every state and in six U.S. territories. EFNEP was developed by the USDA in 1968 based on Federal legislation. EFNEP focuses on increasing nutrition and nutrition-related knowledge and skills for limited-resource children and families.
