Flier for succession planning program.

Farm succession planning can feel complicated, emotional, and overwhelming. Many families know they need a plan but aren’t sure where to start or how to move forward.

Michigan State University Extension is offering a one-day seminar, Getting Your Succession Plan on Track, on March 31 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Ogemaw County Extension Office. This program is designed to provide clarity and structure to the succession planning process and help farm families take practical next steps.

Throughout the day, participants will gain a clear understanding of how the succession planning process fits together. Sessions will include:

  • An overview of the succession planning process
  • Common transfer tools, including business entities, trusts, and wills
  • Approaches to fairness in family farm transitions
  • Key decisions to address before drafting legal documents
  • Legal strategies and long-term care considerations that may affect farm assets

The program will be led by MSU Extension Farm Business Management educators along with attorneys who regularly work with farm families on succession and estate planning. Together, they will provide both educational perspective and practical legal insight grounded in agricultural operations.

Participants will leave with practical tools, a clearer understanding of the planning process, and greater confidence in how to move their succession plan forward.

The workshop will be held March 31, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Ogemaw County Extension Office. There is no cost to attend and lunch is provided.
