Spring 2025 Institute of Water Research Student Intern Highlight:
Alyssa Cogan
Michigan State University, Senior
Major – Environmental Studies and Sustainability
Research/Career Interests - Environmental Science, Project Management
What are your current responsibilities at the IWR?
“In the fall I went on a few site visits to observe tile drain monitoring sites. Additionally, I am responsible for water collection from different sites, depending on any current projects we have, and delivering these to the lab at MSU. Also, during the winter months, I work in the lab alongside the IWRs field technicians, preparing and analyzing soil samples. This includes a variety of tasks including, but not limited to, gravimetric water content and preparation for carbon analysis. Lastly, I assist with remote work as needed, which could include publications, developing water quality monitoring reports, or assistance with other on-going projects.”
What skills have you obtained during your time with the IWR that you hope to use in your future research or career?
“Every day I am learning something new at IWR. My previous experience in water and soil quality was limited, but this role has expanded that and prepared me for further advancement in the future. I have gained a better understanding of project development from start to finish, meeting grant objectives , and administering reports that provide information back to community stakeholders. Additionally, this was my first time with lab experience, outside a classroom environment. Everyone at the IWR has been very willing to teach and help advance me towards future goals throughout this process. I have learned a variety of different tasks that pertain to water and soil quality, and Iam looking forward to gaining more fieldwork experience in the spring.
Would you recommend an internship with the IWR to other students? Which majors would benefit most from an internship with us?
“I would definitely recommend an internship with IWR to other students. The staff is very welcoming and understands your initial skillset. Additionally, they are very flexible and understanding of your course load and class schedule. This had allowed me for a stress-free work environment, knowing that there isn’t a set expectation of hours, and I am allowed to create a schedule that works for both me and my colleagues. Lastly, there is always an opportunity to get involved with multiple projects throughout the IWR and they do their best to cater to your interests and needs that will best further your education and experience!
I feel that anybody in the science realm that has an interest in the environment, especially pertaining to soil and water quality, would benefit from working here. Also, anybody that is looking for a variety of new skills, whether that is fieldwork, lab work or remote work, such as academic writing opportunities or developing reports for project stakeholders. . I think my major fit this internship well, but anyone that studies environmental science, biology or chemistry would be well suited for this position.”
