NCI Year in Review 2024

NCI's 2024 Year in Review: Detailing the year's efforts and accomplishments.

It is that time of year again – the time when I clean off my dry erase annual calendar and prepare for the coming year. As I do this, I reflect on the previous year’s work and am profoundly grateful for the people I have the privilege of working alongside and those that I’ve met through trainings, conferences, classes, and projects. I am always amazed at and excited by the diversity of topics I get to learn about through the projects we partner on.

What connects prison interior design plans, urban and emerging indoor agriculture, aquatic invasive species, memorial planning, mass timber construction, strategic plans, emergency services, and transportation projects? The shared thread that runs through these seemingly disparate topics is Michigan State University’s (MSU) National Charrette Institute (NCI). These are the topics that we’ve led with partners in 2024.

Browse through what we’ve been up to this year and keep an eye out for future newsletters featuring some of these projects, along with some lessons learned from them!

  • NCI conducted virtual focus groups with stakeholders for the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) to update its Aquatic Invasive Species Management Plan.
  • The NCI facilitates and trains professionals and community leaders in the NCI Charrette System—a collaborative, design-based process that harnesses the talents and energies of all interested stakeholders to create and support a feasible plan in a compressed timeframe. This year, NCI’s signature trainings were held in Detroit, Michigan, in May; Portland, Oregon, in October; and online in December. We encourage you to check out NCI’s Individual Certificate Holder database and welcome this year’s participants to it.

  • On February 13, 2023, Michigan State University experienced a mass shooting on its campus that resulted in the deaths of 3 students, wounding 5 more students, and impacting thousands more. NCI supported and facilitated a community engagement process to develop the Feb. 13 Memorial Request for Proposals (RFP) that included 1,968 survey responses, and over 200 focus group offerings. This engagement helped guide the RFP in soliciting proposals for memorials. Click Here to read more about the Feb. 13 Permanent Memorial process.
  • NCI designed and facilitated a convening of over 70 mass timber experts to develop a playbook for a mass timber initiative in the Great Lakes region.

  • NCI engaged Victor Township, MI residents in a conversation about their emergency service provider solutions and funding structure options to help decision-makers meet the needs of the community.
  • Collaborating with researchers across the country, NCI facilitated residents, administrators, and staff in prisons in the development of interior design plans.
  • NCI was part of a multidisciplinary team at MSU that won a Michigan Department of Transportation grant to evaluate public involvement efforts.
