Research & Outreach

The SPDC faculty’s research focuses on compelling core societal needs within and across disciplines and seeks to enrich community and quality of life at local, state, national and international levels. We see world-class built environments as opportunities to focus our future research about where we live, work, play and learn.

Faculty have also historically worked on a wide array of outreach and engagement programs within communities, professional organizations, in concert with elected and appointed officials, and the general public. Research underpins these outreach efforts and students are active participants in these learning opportunities, which provides them with real-world experience.

Core Scholarly Areas of SPDC Research & Innovation

The School of Planning, Design, and Construction (SPDC) at Michigan State University is an
interdisciplinary hub addressing challenges from the local to the global scale. We create sustainable and
healthy environments across built, natural, and virtual spaces. As a leader in promoting innovative,
inclusive, and resilient solutions through a focus on community engagement and advanced intelligent
technology, SPDC's faculty expertise aligns with four core research areas, each contributing to
transformative impacts in academia, industry, and society.
