Are you ready to raise strong, healthy show pigs that turn heads in the show ring?
Well—it all starts with nutrition!
Let’s break it down real quick.
Your pig needs four main things to grow:
Protein, energy, fiber and water.
Protein helps build lean muscle—that’s what gives your pig that strong, show-ready look.
You’ll find protein in feeds made with soybean meal or alfalfa. Typically, when you first get your pigs from the breeder they will need about 18% Crude Protein in their diet. As they grow and get to the fair-ready stage, they will only need about 12-15% Crude Protein in their diet.
Energy comes mostly from carbs and fats. Think corn—it’s a great source that keeps your pig active and growing.
We may not commonly think of fiber when we think of the growing stage, but it is actually very important for the growth of your pig and is key for digestion. Ingredients like oats and wheat middlings help keep your pig’s gut healthy.
Above all, water is the most important nutrient for growth and health. Hydration is key for growth and digestion. Make sure they have access to clean water all the time.
Now, what should you feed?
Most 4-H members go with complete feeds—they’ve got the right balance of everything: protein, energy, fiber, plus vitamins and minerals.
Your pig grows in stages, so the feed changes too:
- Starter feed for young, weaned pigs
- Grower feed to build muscle
- And finisher feed to bulk up before showtime
Watch how much you're feeding. Just like protein percentages, you’ll need to adjust the amount of feed you’re giving as your pig grows and changes, too.
Some 4-H members choose to add supplements to their pig’s ration.
Each supplement serves a different purpose; they can help with muscle, coat shine, digestion, and more. But before adding anything, talk to a vet or a livestock nutritionist to learn which supplements can be most effective to help you with your goals.
We recommend sticking to a regular feeding schedule. Feed at the same time every day, or as close as you can.
Track your pig’s weight weekly. Not too fast, not too slow—you want that ideal balance for show condition.
And lastly, keep that pen clean!
Fresh bedding and a tidy space keep your pig healthy, happy, and stress-free.
So remember—good feed, fresh water, a clean space, and a little love and care go a long way.
You’ve got this.
Now go raise a champion!
