Factors to Consider When Purchasing Your Swine Project Animal

When purchasing your project animal for the year, there are several factors to consider. Keep all of these in mind as you select your project for the year.

Budget

It is important to know your budget.

Who is contributing to the cost of your project? Are you paying for it on your own, or do you have your parents’ help? How much are you able to spend?

Relevant Fair Information

Before purchasing your project animal, you should also know important fair-related information.

What are the dates of your fair?

Is there a possession and/or identification deadline you need to meet?

Does your fair have minimum or maximum weight requirements for animals come fair time?

What are the available divisions at your fair?

Is there the option to bring purebred market hogs? Or are they all shown together?

Ideal Age

Using relevant fair information can help you to calculate the ideal birthdate of your project animal.

In general, market hogs should weigh between 230-290 pounds when finished.

They should be 6-7 months old at the time of fair.

For example, this means that if your fair is at the beginning of August, you may want your hog to be born mid-January to early February.

Find a Breeder

Once you know all of this information, find a breeder to work with. They can help you pick an animal that meets your needs. If you need breeder suggestions, you can ask your 4-H leader or contact your local MSU Extension Office for help.
