Through outreach efforts, volunteers promote environmental stewardship, food security, youth gardening and community improvement. Learn more by visiting Our Mission webpage.

Interested in our program?

Our program has a multi-step application process. The first step is successfully completing a fee-based 10-week, online Foundations of Gardening (FOG) course which is offered twice a year. The course is open to all adults, including prospective volunteers and the general public. Additional steps to become a volunteer take place after successfully completing FOG.

To learn more about the Foundations of Gardening course, scholarship opportunities, and future class offerings, visit our Foundations of Gardening website.

To learn more about the MSU Extension Master Gardener Program application process, visit the Becoming a Volunteer website.

Applying to the MSU Extension Master Gardener Program involves a volunteer screening process and a free, in-person onboarding class, both of which take place after successfully completing FOG. These steps take time to complete and vary by region. Contact your MSU Extension staff below for questions about local onboarding.
