Michigan is home to 12 federally recognized tribal nations, all with unique styles of government. MSU Extension helps these communities form strong leadership through its Building Strong Sovereign Nations program, a training curriculum developed based on the unique needs identified by key tribal stakeholders.
The training helps tribal leaders, who often have different backgrounds in public service, understand more about the historic background of tribal government, their roles and expectations, efficient fiscal management and effective meetings.
The training course pairs a Michigan tribal leader and an MSU Extension educator who is familiar with both tribal government and local county government. This helps tribal leaders learn how to effectively work together with their local government to solve important issues.
These trainings also establish professional networks with tribes throughout Michigan and help members share common experiences and learn from each other.
In the most recent reporting period, of survey respondents:
- 93% reported more confidence in answering policy questions from tribal members.
- 64% indicated they were more likely to speak up during meetings.
- 64% reported more confidence in their ability as a council member.
