Educating Michigan youth about the dairy industry

In the Thumb area of Michigan, the dairy industry is prevalent; however, opportunities for youth to get involved with dairy are limited. To address this issue, Michigan State University Extension hosts the Thumb Dairy Odyssey Days.
Thumb Dairy Odyssey Days was created with help from a Huron County 4-H member to educate area youth who want to learn more about agriculture and careers in the dairy industry. The one-day, hands-on events are hosted at various dairy farms throughout the Thumb. Participants learn from experts in the industry and local farmers how to show cows, pursue potential career opportunities and complete daily chores on a dairy farm.
- Since the event began in 2016, 148 youth have participated.
- Of survey respondents, 81 percent said they were interested in a career they learned about at the event.
- After participating, 60 youth said they would try showing a dairy heifer, and 42 said they would try showing a dairy cow at the fair in the future.
