Dr. Armstrong is an Aquatic Biology Specialist for the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) and is the coordinator of Michigan’s Fish Contaminant Monitoring Program. This program assesses bioaccumulative contaminants in fish tissue from water bodies throughout the state and provides data to inform the fish consumption advisories issued by the Michigan’s Department of Health and Human Services’ Eat Safe Fish program. He is responsible for developing an annual monitoring plan, analyzing and interpreting fish contaminant data, and serving as EGLE’s liaison between various university, federal, state, tribal and provincial agency partners regarding chemical contaminants in fish. He also oversees EGLE’s per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) surface water monitoring program. This role includes designing watershed-scale studies to aid in source tracking efforts to reduce PFAS contamination in Michigan’s water bodies.
