Featured 2026 Community Projects

Each year, the Urban & Regional Planning Practicum partners with communities across Michigan to address real planning challenges through applied research, community engagement, and collaborative problem-solving. The following projects highlight the breadth of issues addressed during the 2026 practicum, from neighborhood revitalization and climate resilience to downtown planning and community development. Collaborating closely with municipal staff, community organizations, and local stakeholders, student teams developed innovative, evidence-based recommendations designed to support informed decision-making and long-term implementation. Together, these projects demonstrate the practicum's commitment to creating meaningful community impact while preparing students for professional planning practice.

East Lansing: East Village Concept Plan

Working with the City of East Lansing, students developed planning strategies to support the revitalization of the East Village district through recommendations focused on land use, mobility, housing, public space, and economic development.

Recipient of the 2026 American Planning Association Outstanding Graduate Student Project Award

Grand Rapids: Bus Stop Shade & Climate Resilience Assessment

Partnering with the City of Grand Rapids Office of Sustainability, students evaluated transit stops across the city to identify opportunities for improving shade, accessibility, climate resilience, and environmental equity.

Flint: Martin Park Neighborhood Revitalization Plan

In partnership with the City of Flint and local community organizations, students developed a comprehensive revitalization strategy addressing housing, neighborhood investment, mobility, public spaces, and community development.
