Explore the Farm Through the Seasons Workshop Series: September Event

Interested in learning about animals and growing fruits and vegetables? Want to spend time on a working farm? Join us for the upcoming “Explore the Farm Through the Seasons” learning series at Schomaker Farms.

Schomaker Farms and Saginaw 4-H Michigan State University are teaming up to offer a 12-month farm education learning series in 2024.  Each month will offer a different learning topic and hands-on activity.  Youth will be fully immersed in the farming experience!

All sessions will take place at Schomaker Farms located at 1103 Leddy Rd, Saginaw, MI 48609

Session registration will be released three months a time. 

Open to ages 5-19.  Activities are best suited for youth ages 8-13.  Younger youth may need help with activities. 

4-H membership is required. Space is limited!

Cost: $10 per session per youth or $20 per youth for 3 sessions.  Youth under the age of 5 may attend along with a registered sibling.  NO REFUNDS will be given.

Additional program details will be sent to all participants prior to the start of each session. 

Explore the Farm Through the Seasons Schedule

Date: January 25
Time: 5:45pm – 6:45pm
Topic: All About Chickens – come and learn about the chickens on farm.  Make a chicken treat and obstacle for the chickens to use. 

Date: February 24
Time: 9:30am – 10:30am
Topic: All About Goats – jump in the goat pen and build something for the goats.  Learn about how to prevent disease and biosecurity. 

Date: March 21
Time: 5:45pm -6:45pm
Topic: Planning a Garden – Learn to identify seeds, how to plan a garden at home! Take something with you to plant at home.

Date: April 25
Time: 5:45pm -6:45pm
Topic: Planting Seedlings – Spend time in the greenhouse planting and choosing your own herbs to grow.  Plant a seed in a glove and watch it grow!

Date: May 16
Time: 5:45pm-6:45pm 
Transplanting Starters – Learn how to move seedlings to containers and take some home to grow.

Date: June 27
Time: 5:45pm-6:45pm
Planting in the Fields – Help us plant everything! Learn how to plant tomatoes, pumpkins, melons, and so much more using your hands and machines.   4-H members will have their own space to plant an herb garden at the farm.

Date: July 18
Time: 5:45pm
Raspberries – Learn all about raspberries.  Pick your own berries, learn about pollinators, plant raspberry shoots and even learn to make your own raspberry jam to take home.
Date: August 15
Time: 5:45-6:45pm
Tomatoes – Learn all about tomatoes.  Learn about weeding, field vs greenhouse varieties, and the life cycle of a tomato.  Get some great recipes and learn about food safety.
Date: September 12
Time: 5:45-6:45pm
Corn – This month it is all about sweet corn vs field corn.  Do you know the difference? Explore farm pollinators with a scavenger hunt and take home some flowers.  Learn how to pick, shuck, cook and eat corn!
