2026 Fisheries and Wildlife Excellence Award

The Department of Fisheries and Wildlife is pleased to announce the 2026 award winners for its FW Excellence Award. Congratulations to all award winners for their outstanding contributions to the department!

The Department of Fisheries and Wildlife Excellence Award was established in 2021 to recognize contributions in any area related to the department’s mission and vision - including, but not limited to, teaching; outreach; research; culture, access, and belonging; mentoring; academic support; leadership; and service to the department, college, university, professional societies, and the public.

Each year, we invite members of our community to nominate their colleagues for this award. This year, we received an outstanding number of nominations, reflecting the depth of care, commitment, and excellence that exists across our department. 

2026 FW Excellence Award Winners

Jamie Lake

Jamie Lake serves as a cornerstone of our department’s daily operations and community culture. In her role supporting HR, financial processes, front office operations, and guest logistics, Jamie is often the first point of contact for faculty, students, visitors, and external partners. She brings patience, responsiveness, and professionalism to a role that requires juggling constant interruptions with a complex and demanding workload. Beyond her formal responsibilities, Jamie contributes in countless ways that strengthen our departmental culture. She approaches her work with a service-oriented mindset, consistently stepping in to help others, support events, and ensure that people feel welcomed and cared for. Whether managing behind the scenes logistics or adding small touches that build community, Jamie’s contributions make a meaningful difference every single day. Jamie’s dedication, reliability, and genuine care for others exemplify excellence in service and community support.

Rachel Leads

Rachel Leads is recognized for her outstanding contributions to research, mentorship, and scientific leadership. As a postdoctoral research associate, Rachel has demonstrated exceptional skills in leading laboratory and field research while managing personnel and resources with care and efficiency. Her work as an ecotoxicologist has contributed meaningfully to PFAS research, while also extending beyond the lab through outreach and science communication with both scientific and public audiences. Equally important is Rachel’s commitment to mentoring students and early career scientists. She fosters an inclusive and supportive research environment, takes time to explain the reasoning behind scientific methods, and actively supports the professional growth of those around her. Through mentorship, grant leadership, and service to the department and research community, Rachel has had a broad and lasting impact. Rachel’s work reflects excellence in research, teaching, and community engagement.

Brian Roth

Brian Roth is recognized for his deep commitment to teaching, mentorship, and student development. Through his work as a professor and researcher, Brian plays a vital role in supporting students pursuing careers in fisheries biology and management. He brings together rigorous academic training with an applied perspective that prepares students for professional success, while fostering a learning environment that encourages curiosity, growth, and confidence. Brian is widely appreciated for his approachability, patience, and genuine investment in student success. He meets students where they are, provides thoughtful guidance, and supports their development over time in ways that extend well beyond formal advising. His mentorship reflects a sustained commitment to student wellbeing and academic excellence. Brian’s dedication to education and mentorship embodies the values of our department.

Mike Shaw

Mike Shaw is recognized for his exceptional leadership, mentorship, and commitment to building community within the department. As a graduate student, Mike consistently goes above and beyond in mentoring undergraduate students – supporting their technical training, professional development, and confidence as emerging scientists. Through his guidance, many students have gained hands on field experience, presented research at professional conferences, and pursued further academic opportunities. Mike’s impact extends beyond his own lab. He actively supports peers across the department, fosters collaboration, and works intentionally to create a welcoming and inclusive environment. Through organizing learning opportunities, social connections, and professional experiences, Mike helps strengthen the sense of belonging and shared purpose within our community. Mike’s leadership and service reflect the very best of what we hope to cultivate in Fisheries and Wildlife.
