Background:

I am an aquatic ecologist and inland lake specialist in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, with a research and outreach program focused on characterizing aquatic plant communities in Michigan’s inland lakes. My work emphasizes the assessment, monitoring, and management of aquatic macrophytes to support lake ecosystem health and inform evidence-based decision-making. I collaborate extensively with key partners, including Michigan State University Extension, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy; the Department of Natural Resources: Fisheries Division; and the U.S. Forest Service. In addition to my research and outreach activities, I teach the fundamentals of lake ecology, and moss and liverwort identification. Collectively, my work highlights the ecological importance of often overlooked plant communities that provide critical ecosystem services for both humans and wildlife.
