Advanced Extension Educator
As an Extension Educator for Michigan State University my focus is Food Safety. I cover two districts; District 14 which includes Alpena, Cheboygan, Charlevoix, Emmet, Montmorency and Otsego. District 4; Alcona, Arenac, Iosco, Oscoda, Ogemaw and Roscommon. My home office is in Montmorency County. I have worked for Extension for 28 years covering a variety of topics. My philosophy is to work with individuals by bringing them in and participate in the process. Do be prepared to be active in my program.
Under the heading of Food Safety I teach many topics. As the program lead for Michigan Cottage Food Law, The program has grown to not only be presented as a face to face program but it is now taught on line once or twice a month thorough out the year. I have taken part in creating additional programs that work closely with Cottage food; Moving Beyond Cottage Food and Selling Honey and Maple Syrup Safely. Other programs are a National program called ServSafe, which provides training and a certificate after passing a national exam at 70% or better. Food Preservation is another program that is taught using approved science based preservation methods, taking food from the garden to the jar. I also teach Cottage Foods; this is an entrepreneurial program directed to those individuals that may like to start their own small food business.
