Erica Anculle is a Michigan Sea Grant Extension educator serving in Southeast Michigan. She has worked in this role since June 2022. Erica works with local communities, agencies and other partners and networks on initiatives such as habitat restoration and coastal community development. Her district includes Wayne, Macomb, Monroe, and St. Clair counties with her office in Wayne County.

Erica manages the MI Paddle Stewards program, which teaches paddlers to identify and report invasive species, as well as how to decontaminate their boats to prevent the spread of those species. She coordinates bi-monthly meetings of partner agencies and organizations who do harmful algal bloom (HAB) outreach and engagement in Michigan. This group hosts annual HABs 101 webinars and develops other educational resources. She also teaches kayak safety classes and coordinates an annual fishery workshop for the western Lake Erie basin to St. Clair River corridor.

Prior to joining Michigan Sea Grant, Erica was the Director of the Oakland County Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area (Oakland County CISMA), a collaboration of over 40 county, municipal, and nonprofit partners to support functioning ecosystems and enhance quality of life through invasive species management.

Erica’s first career was as a paleontologist and natural resource manager for the National Park Service and the University of California Museum of Paleontology. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Geology from the College of Wooster and a Master of Geological Sciences from the University of California, Riverside.

Erica loves sharing her passion for the natural world with partners and the public helping connect people with information they need through webinars, workshops and conversations. She appreciates any opportunity to get outside and see how natural ecosystems really work.
