Build Your Own Mindfulness Practice

Starting anything new can be challenging, especially when we are trying to change our routines. We’ve put together a few tips from health educators that may be helpful when working on a healthy behavior change. Our top tip is to sign up for an MSU Extension health program, but you don’t have to wait for the first session before you begin working towards your goal!

Making SMARTER Goals

When making goals, consider making them "SMARTER":

  • S - Specific: The goal should be clear and detailed, answering what you want to achieve, why it's important, and how you’ll accomplish it.
  • M - Measurable: It should have criteria to track progress and measure success.
  • A - Achievable: The goal needs to be realistic and attainable based on your resources and abilities.
  • R - Relevant: It should align with your broader objectives and values.
  • T - Time-bound: The goal should have a deadline or timeframe to create urgency.
  • E - Evaluate: Regularly review your progress and adjust your plan if necessary.
  • R - Revise: Update or refine the goal as needed to ensure it remains meaningful and achievable.

Create a Practice Plan that Works for You

When thinking about the goal you want to achieve, think about incorporating activities you enjoy or want to do as part of your plan.

Practice Often

Tools only help you get the job done if you use them! Try incorporating a mindfulness practice into your daily routine, even if it is something as simple as taking a deep breath first thing in the morning. Another tip that may help is choosing one thing you already do everyday and turning it into a mindful practice. For example, mindfully brushing your teeth, washing your hands, or getting dressed. Not every mindfulness practice has to be a guided meditation.

Try practicing using one of the mindfulness timers available on this playlist. Start with a short timer, and slowly expand your practice as you get more comfortable over time.
